Director John Adkins Wins Prestigious Bethany J. Ochal Award

Our wonderful director, John Adkins, has been awarded the prestigious Bethany J. Ochal Award for Distinguished Services to the Career by the American Affiliation of Law Libraries. The Bethany J. Ochal Award for Distinguished Services to the Career award is introduced to a Government Law Libraries Exclusive Curiosity Segment member who has designed a important contribution to regulation librarianship.

 

John has dedicated his job as a regulation librarian to advancing access to justice for the people of San Diego County. When John became Director of the regulation library a ten years back, he undertook some daunting assignments. The initial purchase of small business was renovating our Downtown locale to update the setting up with modern-day features and technologies although retaining its mid-century modern-day lines.  Though the renovation was underway, John also dealt with the monetary disaster and its effects on the regulation library’s funding.

 

In purchase to superior advocate for the County Community Law Library technique, John became President of the Council of California County Law Librarians (CCCLL) in 2014. As President of CCCLL, John rallied the fifty California County Law Libraries alongside one another to struggle for supplemental state funding to survive the financial disaster. Under his management, the County Law Libraries 2 times received supplemental state funding and have been identified as community regulation libraries by the state of California and gaining access to resources and grants not earlier out there.

 

John has also been incredibly energetic in the nationwide and community regulation librarian communities. Locally, he was a founding member of the San Diego Space Law Libraries (SANDALL), the community chapter of the American Affiliation of Law Libraries. He also served as the two SANDALL President (2001-2002, 2008-2009) and Vice President (1999-2000).   He has also been a chief in the American Affiliation of Law Libraries (AALL), serving as an Govt Board Member (2014-2017), and serving on the Strategic Scheduling Committee, the Once-a-year Assembly Program Committee, the CONELL Committee, and numerous Exclusive Curiosity Sections. He was identified as an AALL Winner earlier this 12 months for his service to the career.

 

In addition to his function at SDLL, he also volunteers his time and efforts to organizations these kinds of as the Condition Bar of California Civil Justice Approaches Job Force and as a Commissioner on the Condition-Wide California Access to Justice Fee. These teams aim on methods to near the justice gap and enhance access to civil justice for those people dwelling on reduced to moderate incomes.

 

The Bethany J. Ochal Award comes just as John is searching ahead to his retirement at the conclusion of June. We are so delighted to see that his contributions to the career of regulation librarianship have been nationally identified.
