Michigan’s Blue Cross Blue Shield to offer travel benefit for abortion

Michigan’s largest health insurer will soon offer employers a reimbursement option that would cover travel expenses for employees seeking an abortion if the procedure is not available in their state.

The new benefit option from Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan comes in the wake of the U.S. Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade, which now leaves it up to states to allow, restrict or ban abortions. Abortion remains legal in Michigan because of a court-ordered injunction.

Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan and the Blue Care Network are expanding an existing travel reimbursement giving employers the option to cover travel for employees for services not available where they live, including for abortions.

The Detroit Free Press learned of the expanded travel benefit in a Tuesday memo that appears to be sent by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan. While Helen Stojic, a spokesperson for the insurer, couldn’t confirm the existence of the memo, she said Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan had been communicating with customer groups about this travel option.
